BIOGRAPHY OF BISHOP PAT
Bishop Pat was born on May 2nd 1952 in the town of Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland. He was to become the first of 17 children of whom 9 survive currently.
Wanting to be a priest from a very early age he entered seminary in 1970 and was ordained a priest on June 6th 1976 at Waterford Cathedral, Ireland.Pat ministered in South Wales from 1976 until 1978 until he returned to Ireland. He then ministered in the Diocese of Down and Connor from 1978 until 1986 when the then bishop, Cathal Daly, dismissed him for his liberal views and from being outspoken about Catholic Church scandals in the media. He had served in 3 parishes in D&C – the Cathedral in Belfast, Kilkeel in County Down and Larne in Co. Antrim.
Pat remained in Larne after his dismissal and immediately set up an independent ministry which continues to the present day. He does everything any Catholic priest does and has also developed a special ministry to those estranged from the Catholic Church and other churches – the divorced, the LGBT community, women and men involved in relationships with priests etc.
With a smile Pat says that he is: “A black shepherd for black sheep”.
Pat keeps an open house in Larne and has opened his door to the homeless and drug addicts.
